چکیده

In a previous communication, experiments were reported which indicate that the basal (constitutive) level of penicillinase in pathogenic penicillin resistant strains of Staphylococcus aureus can be inducibly elevated 10to 15-fold by in vitro exposure to penicillin under appropriate conditions (Geronimus and Cohen, 1957). If similar elevations in penicillinase activity are induced by penicillin treatment in vivo they must modify significantly the antibacterial effectiveness of penicillin. However, bacteria grown in an animal host may differ widely in enzymic and metabolic activities from bacteria of the same strain cultivated in vitro (Smith and Keppie, 1955; Segal and Bloch, 1956). Therefore, it was considered important to examine the properties of penicillinase in staphylocci taken directly from an animal host. This paper reports studies of penicillinase activity of staphylacocci isolated from the kidneys of experimentally infected mice.

Influence of 2,4,5-trichlorophenoxyacetic Acid on Staphylococcal Penicillinase.

Phytohormones, of which indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) is most widely recognized, are naturally occurring compounds which regulate plant growth activities. Other plant growth-regulating compounds, such as 2,4,5-trichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4, 5-T), differ in that they are chemically synthesized. There are indications that both natural and synthetic plant growth regulators have significant activit...

Lincomycin in the treatment of penicillin-resistant staphylococcal infections in children.

Lincomycin, a new antibiotic chemically distinct from those currently available, was first introduced into the United Kingdom in 1963. Its spectrum of activity is confined mainly to staphylococci (including penicillinase-producing strains), haemolytic streptococci, pneumococci, and C. diptheriae (Lewis, Clapp, and Grady, 1962), and the minimum inhibitory concentration for most strains of these ...

Interaction of Staphylococcal Penicillinase and 6-[D(-

Citri and Zyk (3) recently showed that the penicillinase of Bacillus cereus, on interaction with substrates, may yield conformational changes at the active site of the enzyme. Earlier studies by a number of investigators (1, 2, 4, 6, 8, 11) showed that penicillin analogues resistant to staphylococcal penicillinase, such as methicillin, may cause inactivation ofthe enzyme. In contrast, Richmond ...
